At Jacobs University, Foundation Year students enjoy small classroom sizes and individualized guidance. Our courses are taught by a team of highly qualified instructors who are experienced in creating an energetic and interactive academic learning environment. Several courses are accompanied by tutorials that will allow you to revise course materials.

The two semester program begins with an Orientation Week every year in late August. Classes start on September 1 and end in early June. Students may return home for the Winter break (usually two weeks) and return to campus for intersession courses in January. Important program dates can be found in the academic calendar.

The Advising System

Triangular supervision through our experienced faculty and staff, a personal academic advisor, and a senior student mentor assures that you always know where you stand and that you always have the resources at hand that are necessary for you to succeed.

#1: Our faculty members and our staff will accompany you every step of the way. Whenever you need advice regarding your courses or a personal matter, you can make an appointment with our course instructors, ask a tutor for help, drop by for a cup of tea at the Foundation Year Office or address one of the many friendly staff members at our Student Service Center, the Campus Life Department, the Counseling Center or the Student Records Office.

#2: Academic advisors guide each student through the program. During the Orientation Week, you meet your advisor who will help you design your own personal study plan. Throughout the year, your advisor will monitor your progress, advise you on academic matters and will support you in the process of making future plans.

#3: Senior students act as mentors to Foundation Year participants. Already prior to your arrival at Jacobs, your Foundation Year “Buddy” will get in touch with you. Your Buddy is a student who has already completed the Foundation Year and who has moved on to undergraduate studies. He/She will hence be able to support you in the process of getting ready for Jacobs, to help you find your way around campus and can share own experiences from the Foundation Year Program.
